Uncertainty and Courage
A paragraph in my book, Rejecting Fear, has haunted me since the invasion of Ukraine…
“Using the language of Ignatius of Loyola, we know there literally is a “bad spirit” in the world that speaks in history’s pages, whispering hate speech, inciting hate crimes and war crimes. And then there is the good spirit. Those who listen to this spirit find the courage to face horrific evil by bringing truth and saving lives: German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dutch author Corrie ten Boom, and German industrialist Oskar Schindler, who is credited with saving the lives of 1200 Jewish people…”
As every news network has noted, not since the end of WWII has there been such an act of aggression. What is our response. The world nightly news ended with “Our prayers are with the people of Ukraine tonight.” That is a good place to start.
Listen carefully to the narrative. There are many in Russia who are speaking out against the war on Ukraine. Their courage in the face of uncertainty and certain retaliation reveals their hearts and the spirit of sacrifice by which they are led. The Ukrainian people themselves may be filled with fear, but they are finding the courage to fight.
Let us hold the people of Ukraine in our hearts, asking for their courage, their hope to rise, for help and assistance to surprise them and may the good spirit lead world leaders, not just in words, but deeds. May wisdom and peace find a way to prevail, in all who are involved.
And what about us? How am I led day by day? In every thought, word, and deed, am I allowing good to guide me, so that I do not add to the chaos and evil?
